Wayne Froman

Dear Members and Friends of the Circle,

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Wayne Froman.

Wayne was a longstanding and dedicated member of the Circle, who hosted the 2006 conference of the Circle, on Body and Institution, at George Mason University. With Bernard Flynn and Robert Vallier, he co-edited the volume Merleau-Ponty and the Possibilities of Philosophy: Transforming the Tradition, an important collection of essays by a wide range of scholars. His book Merleau-Ponty: Language and the Act of Speech begins with a poem by Neruda, The Word, which somehow seems fitting at this moment.

Those who attended the Circle will know and remember him well: an always curious, dedicated, focused, and animated thinker and interlocutor.

The Circle will be remembering Wayne at our next meeting in Melbourne, if you have thoughts to offer in person or in writing, please contact me at my Concordia University email address. Wayne’s memorial page at George Mason can be found here.
